Gareth Cater is manager of the Oval Cafe and a new father. We sat down with him to get to know him a little better and to catch up a bit with his vision for the Cafe and beyond.
1. First off, Gareth, what do you do here at YWAM Harpenden?
My role here is to lead the Oval Cafe. My wife (Cindy) and I have been with the Café since 2009. I also have a little involvement with the Highfield Oval Operations Team (HOOT) which helps with the running of our campus.
2. How did you first hear of YWAM?
Well, my mum introduced me to YWAM, and I also seemed to know people who had done a School or two all over the place. So I did a discipleship training school (DTS) in 2008.
3. What is your favorite thing about staffing here?
We get to work in a fun place where every day you can see so much happening for the Kingdom. We serve top quality drinks and cakes. My favorite part is seeing the face of our customers when they find out we do this voluntarily, with no salary or anything.
4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I would love to be in South America, opening a small business to help street children and their families.
5. Finally, what do you feel is your calling here? How are you pursuing it?
My calling when I joined staff was to open a Café and impact the local area. We are working hard on improving and moving it forward. We also want to get more involved in the community than we already are. We even want to start a teen youth night, to have a place to hang out and have fun. Outside of the campus, we have helped open a café in Lebanon, and have talked with a couple other people about helping them to open cafes for community outreach.
The Oval Cafe opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm Monday through Friday. Saturdays are open from 11 to 4.
Be sure to stop in and get a lovely latte or nice slice of banana bread! Check this video out for more info:
